Importing a 3MF into Bambu Studio
The 3MF you download from this site is built for Bambu Studio: one object, several color parts, real millimetres. Importing is quick, but the one step people get wrong is filament assignment — the colors are stored in the file, yet not every slicer version maps them to AMS slots automatically. This page shows the import flow and is honest about which export modes are proven and which are not.
Step 1 — import the file
Download the 3MF from the converter, then open Bambu Studio and use File → Import (or drag the file onto the plate). The model lands centered on the bed. Because the file is sized in real millimetres and centered on a 180 mm plate, it fits every Bambu Lab printer, including the A1 mini, without rescaling.
Step 2 — check the object and its parts
In the object list you should see a single object with several parts beneath it. Each part is one color from your artwork, and the parts stay registered to each other, so moving or scaling the object moves everything together. If you see one merged blob instead of separate parts, the file is fine but your slicer may have collapsed the components — re-import and check that the file ends in .3mf, not .stl.
Step 3 — assign filaments to each part
This is the step to do by hand. Select a part, then assign a filament from your AMS or AMS Lite. Repeat for every part until each color has the spool you want. Do not assume the slicer guessed correctly: versions differ in whether they map the stored colors to slots automatically, so a quick manual pass avoids a surprise print. With four AMS slots you can print up to four colors without manual swaps.
Step 4 — slice and verify before printing
Slice the model, then move the layer slider through the preview. Confirm that each color appears where you expect, that the base plate is solid, and that any counters such as the inside of letters are real holes. Only send the job once the preview matches your intent — this is far faster than discovering a color is on the wrong part after an hour of printing.
Honest status of the export modes
The converter offers three modes, and they are not equally proven:
- Separate parts (relief) — works as separate parts, extruded from the plate to their own heights. This is the mode we are most confident about for per-part filament assignment.
- Painted on top (overlay) — works as a base plate plus thin color skins on top. Fewer filament changes and a flat top; assignment is still per part.
- Color change per layer (layers) — experimental and not verified in a real slicer. It builds one stepped solid and marks where each color band starts, expecting the slicer to swap filament at that height. Treat the color-change markers as unproven: inspect them carefully in the preview and test on a small print before trusting a long one.
We would rather tell you this plainly than have you waste filament. If you need a guaranteed result today, use Separate parts or Painted on top.
If something looks wrong
If parts are missing a color, confirm the part actually imported and that its filament is set. If thin lines vanished, raise Drop speckles in the converter and re-export — details below your nozzle width will not print. If colors are stacked in the wrong order, re-check the tallest part in the object list and reassign. For more background, read how the three modes compare or the SVG to 3MF page.
Frequently asked questions
Does Bambu Studio open the 3MF automatically?
Usually yes, but it varies by version. If colors do not map to AMS slots on their own, assign a filament to each part by hand.
Why does Bambu Studio say "invalid config, load geometry data only"?
Bambu Studio may show the message "The 3mf file has invalid config, load geometry data only" when you open a 3MF made outside Bambu Studio. It is harmless: the 3MF has no Bambu project settings, so Studio loads the geometry only. Each colour still arrives as a separate part assigned to its own filament slot (1, 2, 3, ...) - set each slot's colour to match. To get rid of the message, open the file once and use File → Save Project As in Bambu Studio; the saved project opens without it (tested in Bambu Studio 2.8).
Which export mode is verified?
Separate parts and Painted on top work as parts. Color change per layer is experimental and has not been verified in a real slicer.
Can I use a different slicer?
The plain 3MF structure should open elsewhere, but it is built with Bambu Studio in mind. Filament mapping may differ.
Why is my model the wrong size?
It is exported in real millimetres at the width you chose. If it looks large, lower the Width (mm) setting and re-export.
Does the 3MF include supports or settings?
No. It contains geometry and color parts only. Choose supports, layer height and speeds in Bambu Studio as usual.
